What is the difference between commercial photography and advertising photography?

As a photographer and a photo lover, you know the importance of commercial and advertising photos. Companies are looking for visually engaging photos for their campaigns.

Thousands of images are being used to create an impression in consumers' minds. So you need to know the clear difference between commercial and advertising photography.

As someone who loves photography as well as a participant in the Social media marketing specialization by Northwestern University in Coursera, I found 2 articles highlighting the key difference between commercial and advertising photography

The first article is titled 'Difference Between Commercial & Advertising Photography. Here Sampson Quain talks about the main elements of commercial and Advertising photography. How it is different in terms of intent, style, and end-user.

What is commercial photography?

Commercial photography is taking photos of a product or a subject. These commercial photos are used in sales for promotional content.
There are a lot of stock photography sites like Shutterstock, Adobe stock, etc. where you can buy commercial images. However, certain companies hire their photographers to do that job.

What is advertising photography?

Advertising photo is framed in such a way that it creates a feeling in people's minds and take action like buying it. Advertising photography is all about portraying feelings and convincing people.

The second one is by Mark Delong Photography titled 'What is the difference between commercial and advertising photography.

Here we can see how commercial photography is focused on a particular product. he is also comparing it with stock photography.

I have listed 3 Action items that I would recommend to you.
1. Quality over quantity - Make sure it's a good quality image whether it's a commercial or advertising photo. 2. Set up - Look for a professional arrangement for taking photos. 3. No distraction - Background shouldn't be any distraction in the background.

Now that you have a clear idea you can go and check out a few commercial and advertising photos. can you tell me which one is commercial and which one is advertising in the comments? 😉
